Background of the study:
Commercial motorcycling has become a popular form of income generation among youths in many Nigerian communities. In Oron Local Government Area, this mode of employment offers an accessible alternative to formal job opportunities, especially amid high unemployment rates. The affordability of motorcycles and relatively low entry costs make commercial motorcycling an attractive venture for many young people seeking immediate financial returns. However, the informal nature of the sector poses significant challenges. Many operators lack formal training, are exposed to high risks on the road, and often work without the protection of labor laws or social security benefits. While commercial motorcycling can foster economic independence and entrepreneurship, it may also perpetuate a cycle of informal employment with limited prospects for long-term career development (Etim, 2023). Furthermore, concerns regarding safety, regulation, and income stability persist, raising questions about the overall sustainability of this employment model (Nsikak, 2024). This study investigates the broader impact of commercial motorcycling on youth employment, assessing both its benefits and drawbacks within the local economy (Udoamaka, 2025).
Statement of the problem:
In Oron, commercial motorcycling has emerged as a key source of employment for youth; however, its informal structure brings significant challenges. Many young operators face safety risks due to inadequate training and a lack of regulatory oversight. The absence of formal contracts and social security benefits leaves them economically vulnerable. Moreover, while the sector provides immediate income, it often limits opportunities for skill development and career advancement. The rapid growth of commercial motorcycling, unaccompanied by corresponding policy frameworks, has raised concerns over long-term income stability and road safety. This study seeks to critically examine the dual-edged impact of commercial motorcycling on youth employment and propose regulatory measures that could formalize and enhance the sector’s contribution to economic development (Etim, 2023; Nsikak, 2024).
Objectives of the study:
To assess the role of commercial motorcycling in youth employment.
To analyze the economic benefits and challenges associated with the sector.
To propose policy recommendations to formalize and regulate commercial motorcycling.
Research questions:
How does commercial motorcycling contribute to youth employment in Oron?
What are the economic benefits and challenges faced by youth in this sector?
What regulatory measures can improve the sector’s impact on formal employment?
Research Hypotheses:
H1: Commercial motorcycling significantly contributes to youth employment.
H2: The informal nature of commercial motorcycling poses challenges to economic stability.
H3: Formal regulation can enhance the economic benefits of commercial motorcycling.
Significance of the study:
This study provides critical insights into the role of commercial motorcycling in youth employment, highlighting both its economic potential and associated challenges. The findings will inform policymakers and stakeholders on how to better regulate and support this sector, thereby promoting safer and more sustainable employment opportunities. The research contributes to understanding informal employment dynamics and offers practical recommendations for integrating commercial motorcycling into the formal economy (Nsikak, 2024; Udoamaka, 2025).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to examining the impact of commercial motorcycling on youth employment in Oron Local Government Area.
Definitions of terms:
Commercial Motorcycling: The use of motorcycles for income-generating activities.
Youth Employment: Job opportunities and work engagement for young individuals.
